Textures Tutorial

I've been getting emails from some of you asking me how do I get the blurry scratchy effect on my photos. I'm not sure what the technique is official named, but I like to call it Texturizing. What I do is, I apply a texture layer onto my photos. Which is certainly so damn easy. So, here's a little tutorial on how to texturize your photos :}

I personally retouch my photos using Photoshop CS2. But any Photoshop version is able to do this trick. (Click the step if you need to see how it looks like on screen)

1) Drag the texture to your photo.
2) Decrease the Opacity to any desired amount (my usual opacity range is 30%-50%)
3) Adjust the contrast using the Curves tool.
4) From this step, you can adjust the color tone to whatever you like or just let it be (for this photo I made it black & white with one of my actions)
5) Merge the layers by choosing Flatten Image.
6) Save file, and you're done! Yeaaah!

As I said, it's so simple. You can download the texture I used here. But cool textures can be found all over the internet or even in your own hard disk. Try browsing here, and try any kind of textures. Don't be limited by only my 6 steps above, try to create something new, explore all the tools! And most definitely, have fun! Ciao!

@Lidwina Grata
Your love keeps me going, thanks!

@Sheyka
Ahahaha of course! The most famous texture provider nowadays is Sanami276. I'm not such a texture fan actually, I only texturize once in a while when I'm bored or if I can't a perfect color tone while retouching photos hihi. So, I'm not really aware other PS artists, but perhaps I should start browsing :}

I'm glad it's helpful, this is for those who've been asking how I retouch my photos. Rather than writing the same email over and over again, this way is much better I guess!

I'm a Canon user actually, but if I were you, I'd go with D80 (not from your possible answers, but it's a good camera :p). Mmm, D70 is good enough.

Hehehhe, well, sharing is caring kan? Kenapa juga pura-pura jago dalam suatu hal? One day bakal ketawan juga tricknya, so mendingan di bagi-bagi aja ilmunya sekalian ;)

Mmm, sebenernya that new blog, //Discover, cuman semacam Tumblrnya Casseybunn. Hahaha. So apapun yang menarik that I found, I'd post it there. Soalnya, my current blog udah bener-bener organized, ngga mau jadi berantakan aja hihi. Tapi, I'm going to invite friends untuk gabung dalam postingnya //Discover, biar banyak penemuannya ;)

LOL, CASSEY, CASSEY,
it seems like most of the photoshop-ers should give a lot of credits to SANAMI@dA. Not only you, but also a lot of my friends in LiveJournal who love to play PS as well as me, always write SANAMI as their Resources Credit in Texture.

Did you know CRAZYKIRA too? Or maybe YUNHE? they are the good texture and PS resources providers too. You must know that LiveJournal has a lot of PS artists. They are really talented. But mostly, their artworks or GPX were dedicated to their own idols like Korean artists, or even the western TV series casts like House, Gossip Girls, etc.

Your tutorial is very helpful :D

P.S : I need your suggestion, what should I buy, Nikon D40 or D70?

Hahaha, well I've always wanted to make this world a better place somehow, and if this post does so, then thank God! And thank you!

Mmm, how much more do you need me to explain it? Do you have any particular questions? How about sending an email to me instead, I'll be happy to answer your questions :)

Yes, I'm a Canon user. For starters, I'd recommend the one I'm using now which is the EOS 350D, or the EOS 450D. Because it's very user friendly, not too much buttons or modes, just the simple ones. And also, it's not too "advanced" either. Like the expensive ones, let's say the EOS 5D, it's so awesome that the user doesn't even have to think anymore to take the photo, just click and the photo turns out super awesome. In the end, the user ends up learning....nothing at all about photography. And you wouldn't want to be a poser right? :)

Bloggers like you are making this world a better place :) This tutorial looks pretty interesting, eventhough I haven't tried it yet (which i am going to, of course).

I read your post about that shaking light effect. Could you explain more in your next post? Maklum, i'm such a so-called-pro in PS/photography hehehehehe :):)

Speaking of, you're a Canon user arent you? What would be the best DSLR Canon camera, in your opinion? And what's your's?

Cassey said...

@Adeline
Thanks! Hahaha, easy, just by spending all my time in front of my computer while browsing endlessly on the internet :D

@Laras
You're welcome, have fun!

To be honest with you, the 4-digit Canon cameras aren't that good. On the other hand here's what I've learn about the Canon series; the 3-digit ones are the ones for those who are learning the basics (350D, 450D, 500D), the 2-digit series are for those who've mastered the basics and wants to slack off and wants easier modes for taking photos (50D,40D), and meanwhile the 1-digit series are the most expensive and most advanced, you don't even need any skills, it's so perfect you can just hold the camera and press the shutter randomly and the photo will turn out great (5D, 1D)

Amelina said...

Thanks, I think i can manage it.

And thanks for the advice btw! What do you thing about EOS 1000D. Is it good?
