Practice Makes Perfect

Remember Nina? My Diana F+ lomo camera that Jason gave me for my birthday? Well, I've done a lot of practicing, but still haven't felt good about any photos.

I tried out the B&W Kodak 120 film, just for the pleasure of my curiosity. I wondered, why is it slightly more expensive than the the color ones? So, I bought like 5 rolls, and started my first roll right away. It was a month ago when my sister, Sky, came to visit me here in Jogjakarta. And for the first time ever since I moved here, I went to the beach. I mean we-- we went to the beach.

Nina <3

Even though I love Nina, my number 1 gadget is still Canny.

It took me a month to get this lazy ass to the photo lab and print out the photos I took that day. When I first saw the photos, I was shocked-- I thought they gave me the wrong photos or something. The photos looked GREAT! (compared to my previous lomo experiments). I'm starting to think maybe I'm getting better in the black & white area. Hmmm.

So anyway, apparently I made a mistake when I loaded the film into the camera; I used the wrong frame, or the wrong setting (still not sure). But that whatever the mistake was, it made the photos look pretty awesome. The frames are kinda odd which looks good, and the photos are a bit blurry and scratchy which also looks good. Tell me, what do you think?

These are my favorites, but you can click here to see all the results from this roll ;)

P.S : If you're nifty with lomo cameras, I'd really like to hear from you! Any tips, critics, or whatever? Please? And would you recommend me to buy other lenses?

Thaaaank youu, I'm really looking for some critics though! That's called multi exposure, a trick you can do with lomo cameras, and lots of other analog vintage cameras. Once you take 1 photo, don't wind the film and let it be, take a second photo, which in result would become a ghostly second image on the first one ;)

>JellyPlayground
Hehehe thank you.
Iya betul! Sangat sangat butuh cahaya yang lebih. Kalo shutter di sengaja buka yang lama, fotonya malah jadi acak adul ;p

>vebryadayadaaa
Yes, the frame isn't supposed to look like that, that's the mistake I've done. But looks good ey?
Awwh, that's a shame. Where you do live?

I use fisheye lomo right now and it's friggin' hard to find a 35mm B/w, hu hu.

Cassey said...

Thank you! Ah really? 35mm's are much easier to find! You shouldn't buy them at the malls, you should get them at one of those personal photo studios. The ones with people's name as the name of the shop. Hahahha. Like Yonas photo, etc. ;)

Cassey said...

Aaaah don't be. You should learn to do it yourself ;) So, next time you can open your own shop, no more depending on nci-nci hehehe

i've own holga for almost 4 years. and mostly i got crap picture coming out. but no matter how crap it is, every time i processed the film roll, it gave me like one picture that make me fell in love for it. (even im the only one who thought that way about that picture. tehehe :) ) that's what make those bunch of plastic cameras special for me.
and i love the way my camera surprised me after i took the photo out from processing lab :)

just don't think too much cass. remember the tagline of lomo?
"don't think just shoot"
because evry pictures you take has its own uniqueness when you use lomo camera and I believe it's definitely true.

well, seems I'm expert on this thing, aren't I? hahaha in fact we're way the same cass. I have an oktomat and I'm too lazy to explore it after several rolls-washed :(

As I read on the lomography manual book, "The secret to lomo photography is the joy you get from being surprised. So surprise yourself, don't take it too seriously and have fun" -- Yes, I read the manual hehe

Exactly! "The secret to lomo photography is the joy you get from being surprised. So surprise yourself, don't take it too seriously and have fun"
Oh no, don't lose your spirit to explore, come on get the lazy ass going, and start a brand new day!

>Kimo Allegra
Thank you, great is way much better than good. Appreciate it :)

Cassey said...

>Super-A
Ahaha same here! My first roll was also a disaster, needed a couple more to really understand how the toy camera works ;) You really shouldn't let the photos waiting too long, as I just found out, the photos apparently can fade away and get more thinner the more longer you wait. So hurry! Print the photos!

>Ty
Thank you sweets, and thank you for the email xx

>Nur Zaman
Ahahaha, saya bukan guru yang baik ;) Paling-paling bisa kasih tips hehehe. Saqy? Tau kayanya, tapi belum kenal secara langsung. Hehehehe. Salam kenal juga :)

>sararocks
It's called "Multi Exposure", overlapping images. Hehehe. Duh nggak tau istilah bahasa indonesianya though hehehe. Thanks ya! :)

>Nisa Puspasari
Hehehe thank you. Yes, it is too expensive for something made from plastic. Bahkan aku pun harus dibeliin Jason, baru mau belajar pakenya hehehe. Aku ngekos di daerah Selokan Mataram, tapi nanti mau pindah kayanya, karena terlalu jauh dari kampus dan menyebabkan males kuliah hehehe :p Udah dapet kosan disini belum?

Makasiiiiiih. Hehehe. Nggak, yang ada diri sendirinya itu difotoin sm orang lain ;P

>jambam
Wow, thank you very much! I'll be right over to claim it with a huge smile on my face

>Mutiara
Awwh, that's a shame. But don't feel unfortunate. I didn't get my first camera until I was 17. And it required a lot of evidence of good academic scores. Your parents are doing exactly what they should, teaching you to understand the value of things, and to put your priorities in first place. And having a camera is definitely not a priority, you wouldn't die without having one, right? Feel blessed, and be patient. You can always save money, and while you do, be good in school. Get a great report and one day you can say to your parents, "I've got good scores, am I worthy to have a little new hobby now?"

Well hurry! Nanti kaya aku lho, dapetnya yang jauh dari kampus, jadinya sering males berangkat kuliah hehehe

>Ai
Namanya "Multiple Exposure", overlapping images. Caranya gampang kok, kan kalo pake kamera Diana, abis ambil foto filmnya diputer terus bisa ambil foto kedua. Iya kan? Nah, beda cerita kalo mau multiple exposure.

あい [Ai] said...

kak itu cranya gmana supaya kyk ada 2 objek gitu dlm satu foto, kyk yg foto pertama sma keempat yg pke diana, kalo pake fisheye jg bsa gak?
thanks ya kak ! maaf mrepotkan hihi

mybrainsgrowell said...

coba aja dulu cass, hasilnya gak bisa di tebak.

Cassey said...

Hehehe nggak bisa ditebak tuh gimana?? Hahaha ok, nanti dicoba ;)

rizky maretha said...

hahaha it's pretty good work. awesome. <3
and yeah, did you put the 35mm film instead of 120mm cass? hihihi maybe that's why there's to many black space on your photos. *maybe :P

oh,lomo fisheye camera can also took multiple exposure shoot cass :) just one click! and you can take a new picture in the same frame. just like diana.

Ayu Hadiwiguno said...

Kak cassey itu kan fotonya udah keren... Hehehe. Cuman kalo mau ngedandanin pake lensa fisheye aja, atau wide angle and close up terus flashnya dikasih color gel filter kak. Kalo mau seru mainnya pake splitzer aja

Ayu Hadiwiguno said...

Eh iya kak terus cari deh 35mm back nanti jadi panoramic gitu hasilnya, mirip2 horizon. Tapi filmnya khusus. Diana kak cassey namanya nina ya? She should meet my heidi! :D

avputries said...

whoa, i saw the whole collection in flickr. bagus semuanya.

fantabulous

Cassey said...

>rizky maretha
Emm, no, I'm confident it's the 120 film. I still can't figure out how to load a 35mm film to a lomo camera yet. I'm pretty sure I just used the wrong frame :p
Well, there you go, an answer for Ai :) Thank you!

>Ayu Hadiwiguno
Color gel filter? Sounds hot! Hahaha. Yeah, okay2, thanks for the tips! Emang udah ada rencana beli splitzer nih, tapi we'll see hehehe. Oh yes! Pengen bgt nih 35mm Diana Back! Bener-bener pengennnnn banget. Mahal ga ya? Nanti mau cek harga di Jakarta kalo udah liburan hehehe.

>avputries
Thank you! You're a sweetheart! <3

alvelyn said...

hi hi hi,

my name is alvelyn and i am not from indo,
i was actually wondering if jakarta sells 35mm film rolls at iso 800 and 1600? and where can i get the film rolls? any photo shops? how much do 35mm film rolls normally cost say for standard iso 400? like 3 in a pack or something. i will be forever ever thankful for your help. really appreciate this.

btw, great photos :)

Cassey said...

Hi Alvelyn.

To be frank, I'm not quite the right person for you to provide this information. I'm pretty much a digital minded photographer. But here's what I know, I'm pretty sure there are much less places that sell 35mm at higher iso than 400 today in Jakarta. There used to be a place photographers go, it's called Pasar Baru, which is located in the center of Jakarta. However people have been saying that the sellers there are no longer available to handle photography needs. 1 35mm film roll at iso 400 usually cost around idr 30,000. And you can find them everywhere in Jakarta. Fuji film and Kodak is everywhere! Just open your eyes and look around. if you're looking for rare films, i suggest you to get them on the internet instead ;}
