What is Love?

photo by : Wendee Widiantini (we look like very ugly vampires in this photo haha)

Because I am studying philosophy in college and I've always liked to share with you a glance of my thoughts, I would quote from Plato, a famous Greek philosopher.

According to him, at the beginning of creation, men and women aren't as they are now; there was just one being, who was kinda short, with a body and a neck, but his head was two faces, looking in different directions. It was if two creatures had been glued back to back, with two sets of sex organs, four legs and four arms.

However, the Greek gods were jealous. Because this creature of four arms and four hands could work harder and stand or walk for long periods of time without tiring.

Zeus, the supreme lord of Olympus, said : "I have a plan to make these mortals lose some of their strength."

And he cut the creature in two with a lightning bolt, creating man and woman.

Because of that, man and woman have became weak and disorientated without one another. And now they have to search for their lost half and embrace it, and embrace it more to gain back their former strength. For that, two must become one. That embrace in which the two bodies becoming one again is what we call today, Love.

What do you think? Please share your thoughts with me :)

Well, anything is ok. Actually I'd like to know your opinion about the story, and also your own "belief" about what love is, or anything! Haha

This is amazing, I always believe that men and women complete each other's empty spaces.

Actually, I don't really care about its meaning and this philosophy within. But after read your post, well, it's interesting :) though I don't really know bout philosophy stuff hehe. For me, love is all about take and give. Just simple like that ;)

Cassey Bunny said...

shame on you cassey, there's no such thing as ugly vampires, you two are adorable : )
as i read that i thought "gee i think i've heard this from somewhere" and it turns out it's one of the song from Hedwig and the Angry Inch!

Cassey Bunny said...

Ahahahaha, well what i meant is, we somehow look like vampires in that photo, but we both look horrible! Well sorry! Hahahaha.

Whoa, never heard that song! What's the title? i read about this in a book of Greek philosophers for my exam hehehe

L. said...

very interesting. i've never heard that one before

Cassey Bunny said...

yeah, it's nice to know and fun to believe :p

Nunu Fithria said...

Sounds illogical yet that kind of explains why men and women generally have different point of view about various things. Interesting and pwetty sweet~
And I think I've read something about this in a comic!

Cassey Bunny said...

^nindya
mhmm! exactly, i agree with that also. it's a fact we're weak without one another (no matter men or women), or at least, we're weak being alone. we're humans, we need each other :p

hahaha, thanks! but that's too much, edward and bella is definitely far from that photo! i still think we look horrible haha

sleepyheaded nindya said...

i know it's against the biological theory. but, I'm sure that Plato right about " mens are weak without women, and womens are weak too without mens" ;)

by the way.. you guys don't look like vampires!! you two just like.. Edward and bella.. okay, vampires.. but, the gorgeous one ;)

Ellya Nuraisyah said...

im with you cass. i decide to believe it, it's very lovely theory. two must become one...

Cassey Bunny said...

^nunu fithria
haha, of course it's illogical. it's a silly theory Plato made about us, philosophers are weird. But even though it doesn't make sense, at least it does give explanations. it is very sweet in my opinion, believing it makes life more challenging and fun. i guess i'm not the first one to write about of course :p

Cassey Bunny said...

it's so beautiful i had the biggest smile once i finished reading about it! i was like "i can't wait to tell this story to everyone!" hahaha

Philosophies about love is one of my deepest obsession. i don't know why, i just can't get enough of it! i'm so chessy, but it's true. i'm so happy i could share this story with you

Cassey Bunny said...

^Detta
it does! it made me feel that way as well, that's why i posted it, wondering whether other people feels that connection too or not :p

Cassey Bunny said...

^Enep
He is a crazy philosopher, some of his theories are just plain stupid. but, some are interestingly imagination-friendly. i'm glad you agree with this one, it is super sweet ;)

ezra said...

umm, have you ever heard "the embrace in which the two bodies refuse to become one again is what we call sex"? that's also plato's saying

Z.A.T said...

I think it's interesting, I always like Greeks myths~ tho, it's weird, but interesting :D

Cassey Bunny said...

^hfm
Empty spaces. aww i like that. Yeah, we're all supposed to complete each other :)

Cassey Bunny said...

^ezra
Yes! i've read that too. i was actually going to write that as well on this post, but i remembered almost most of my readers are underage :p

Cassey Bunny said...

^Felkiza
Aww, that's too bad you don't care, because everyone is a philosopher! Even you, you write, and you have your own beliefs (love is all about take and give), voila! you're a philosopher! :D

Cassey Bunny said...

^Z.A.T
Greek myths are the best! Except the creepy ones, but greek philosophers are such awesome storytellers! love 'em!

hi cassey,
since i took philosophy class, ive learned that philosophy and what my holy bible said is very different if not the opposite of one another.
it was a conflict for me,
but i still chose my religion regardless what&how the philosopher goddesses addressed topics and issues in such a convincing, logical and sophisticating way.
so i think of philosophy simply as a matter of subject not as a base for my beliefs in life.
